Project Plan   |
Target gangs by Spotlighting Repeat Offenders

The team intends to develop strategy that will reduce recidivism of gang members who commit misdemeanors and gross misdemeanor offenses.  The team is researching a program that is in place in Spokane, WA to see if it could be applied in Tacoma to address repeat offenders, and is working to invite appropriate stakeholders to join the team.

Crime Target

gang activity

Aspect of Crime Addressed

reduction of gang member recidivism for misdemeanors and gross misdemeanors

General Prevention Strategy

Asking the question, "How are gang members being handled after arrest for all misdemeanors and gross misdemeanors?" this team will use data collection and analysis to develop strategies and educate the public.

How will this effort involve or include the community?

A method will be developed to engage the public in reviewing analyzed data through the neighborhood councils, gang summits, Safe Streets, media and City Council. These groups will be engaged in developing recommendations for improvement such as stronger and more consistent enforcement of sentencing.

What pieces of information or resources are needed to move forward?

We need misdemeanor offense data and Municipal Court disposition data, if available, from K. McAlpine.
