Three local groups honored with AMOCAT Arts Awards
The Weekly Volcano, Victory Music, and artist team Lance Kagey and Tom Llewellyn have been selected to receive the Tacoma Arts Commission’s 2007 AMOCAT Arts Awards for three different categories.

The arts patron award goes to the Weekly Volcano for their dedication in covering the arts and culture in the South Sound since November, 2001. The Volcano’s coverage of a wide spectrum of arts, paired with editorials and feature articles, has helped keep local residents in tune with what is happening year-round and has assisted local artists in developing their careers.

The community outreach by an organization award goes to Victory Music for their 38-year history of supporting Northwest acoustic, jazz, blues and folk music. Victory Music currently hosts four open mics around the Puget Sound region every week and publishes the Victory Review. They also received funding from the Tacoma Arts Commission in 2007 for the production of a children’s summer concert series in Wright Park.

The community outreach by an artist award goes to artist team Lance Kagey and Tom Llewellyn for their work as Beautiful Angle. This duo produces a limited run of hand-crafted letterpress posters which are distributed throughout Tacoma neighborhoods via wheat paste and staples. This sustainable art project, which began in October, 2002, brings fine letterpress art and poetry to the public in a creative and accessible format.

The AMOCATs will be awarded during the opening celebration of Art at Work month from 6 to 9 p.m. on Nov. 2 at the Museum of Glass. The evening’s programming will feature live music by a quartet from the Tacoma Youth Symphony, hors d’oeuvres, and an opportunity to view the museum’s galleries. This event is free and open to the public.
