The Neighborhood Business District Program (NBDP) was created in 1991 as a direct response to the community’s request that neighborhood enhancements become a top priority for the City of Tacoma. The NBDP goal was to bring positive growth and sustainable improvements to the business communities.
The continuing partnership works by having constant communication flow between Tacoma's Neighborhood Business Districts and the City staff. Monthly meetings with the Cross District Association, which consists of representatives from each of the twelve business districts, is one of the tools we use to discover potential obstacles and opportunities early on.
Planning is also an important part of the partnership with City staff working regularly with district volunteers on long term planning for physical improvements (traffic calming, hazardous sidewalk, blight removal), streetscape enhancements (transit shelters, trash receptacles, benches, trees), promotional activities (special events, retail events, cooperative advertising), and economic restructuring activities (property inventories, marketing analysis, cluster analysis).
We also bring technical assistance to districts through a professional and trained staff in the field of economic development as well as providing direct assistance for façade improvements, small business coaching and small business financing.
