This is an opportunity to meet members of the 17 specialized Safe and Clean teams formed to focus on crime reduction, learn more about the work they’ve done and find out how you can get involved.

Members of City Council are scheduled Nov. 23 to receive a presentation from the chair of the Human Services Commission on recommendations for funding human services programs through the General Fund Community Services funding source. The Council is also scheduled to receive an update on the City’s Shoreline Master Program and a presentation on the history and future of the Sperry Ocean Dock.
The Council will not take public comment during the noon study session held in the Tacoma Municipal Building North, 733 Market St., Room 16. The 2011-2012 Biennial Budget proposal will be considered by the City Council at a budget workshop on Tuesday. The workshop will be held Nov. 23 from 9 to 11 a.m. in the Council Chambers on the first floor of the Tacoma Municipal Building, 747 Market St. The workshop will be streamed live on the web at www.tvtacoma.com and broadcast live on TV Tacoma.

Members of City Council are scheduled Nov. 23 to hear the final reading of an ordinance that would adopt the 2011-2012 Biennial Budget. The 2011-2012 Biennial Budget for the City of Tacoma is required by City Charter and State of Washington laws. No reserve funds were used to balance this proposed budget and, if approved, City Council will begin the biennium with $2.65 million in their emergency contingency fund and a 2011-2012 budget that is $40 million smaller than the previous biennial budget. The city manager presented his budget to Council on Sept. 28 and held budget workshops throughout October and early November. City Council are scheduled Nov. 23 to consider a resolution that would approve declaring a section of City-owned property lying within the South Shirley Street right-of-way, north of South 12th Street, as surplus and conveying the property to Habitat for Humanity at no cost. Habitat for Humanity would develop the property to provide affordable housing for low income families.

Tacoma Solid Waste Management will not pick up garbage, recycling or yard waste on Thanksgiving, Nov. 25. Customers whose garbage, recycling and yard waste is normally picked up on Thursday will have a Friday pickup. Friday customers will have collection on Saturday. All other collection days are on their regular schedule. The City of Tacoma’s landfill, recycling center and household hazardous waste facility will close on Thanksgiving Day only.

Start your holidays with a tree lighting on Saturday, Nov. 27. The 64th annual tree lighting is a free community event that will take place at the corner of 9th Street and Broadway in Downtown Tacoma. Festivities will get underway at 5 p.m. in the Pantages Theater Lobby.
