Conversation with University of Washington-Tacoma chancellor focus of study session
At study session on Tuesday, Oct.4, the City Council is scheduled to meet the new chancellor for the University of Washington-Tacoma, Debra Friedman. The Council will not take public comment during the noon study session in the Tacoma Municipal Building North, 733 Market St., Room 16. Audio from the session will be broadcast live on TV Tacoma and on www.tvtacoma.com. On-demand audio archives are available on the web within 24 hours of the meeting at www.tvtacoma.com.

Medical cannabis moratorium could be extended
City Council is scheduled Oct.4 to hear the final reading of an ordinance that would adopt findings to justify the continuation of the emergency moratorium enacted by Ordinance No. 28010 on the acceptance of applications for the establishment, location, operation, licensing, permitting, maintenance, or continuation of medical cannabis collective gardens or medical cannabis dispensaries within the City. If approved, the amendments would extend the moratorium for a period of one year to Aug. 1, 2012.

Public hearing on large scale retail establishment moratorium, Oct. 5
On Oct. 5, 2011, at 5 p.m. the Planning Commission will hold a public hearing regarding the current moratorium on large scale retail establishments (those with a floor area greater than 65,000 square feet) adopted by the City Council. The hearing will be held in the City Council Chambers on the 1st Floor of the Tacoma Municipal Building (747 Market Street). The moratorium applies citywide and was enacted for a duration of six months (until Feb. 28, 2012). As stated in the ordinance, the purpose of the moratorium is to allow the City time to evaluate the impacts of these kinds of uses and consider potential changes to the applicable regulations and requirements. The public is invited to come and testify at the hearing or provide written comments using the return address below no later than 5 p.m. on Friday, Oct. 7, 2011, or by facsimile at (253) 591-2002 or via email at planning@cityoftacoma.org. City Council seeks applicants for Board of Ethics
The City of Tacoma is recruiting a volunteer for the Board of Ethics, to fill the unexpired term of vacant Position No. 4 through Dec. 31, 2013. The board meets the second Wednesday of each quarter at 6:30 p.m. in the Tacoma Municipal Building at 747 Market St., or as necessary. This is an unpaid position appointed by the City Council. Applications must be submitted to the Mayor’s Office by Oct. 14 2011. To apply, send a completed application to Cindy DeGrosse, Mayor’s Office, 747 Market St., Room 1200, Tacoma, WA 98402.
