Through the world, the Nutcracker Ballet has become a special Christmas event for generations of children. The Nutcracker and the King of Mice written by the German author E.T.A. Hoffman and published in 1816, served as the story for the ballet choreographed by Marius Petipa. The musical score was composed by Peter Ilyich Tchaikovsky in 1892. Beginnings: the first 100 years of Tacoma’s neighborhoods, takes us on a journey into our city’s past and tells the early story of the people and events which shaped the community we see today. Using resources of the vast photo collections of the Tacoma Public Library and the words of local historians, Beginnings shows how Tacoma evolved and grew from a collection of 19th Century farming and logging communities to a modern industrial city almost overnight.
