Neighborhood Council Program

Tacoma's Neighborhood Council Program offers a way for community members to band together to improve their immediate surroundings through partnership with each other and the City. Tacoma's Neighborhood Council Program has helped the members of our eight council areas reclaim the heart and souls of the neighborhoods, but as Tacoma continues to grow, so does the work of our Neighborhood Councils.

Tacoma is a city where rolling up your sleeves can truly have an impact, and our Neighborhood Council Program offers excellent ways to do just that.

About the Neighborhood Councils
In 1992, the eight Neighborhood Councils in Tacoma were formed. The passage of the Growth Management Act in 1992 and the formation of the eight Neighborhood Councils in 1992 has led to a greater citizen involvement in the planning process and a streamlining of Tacoma's comprehensive plan.  Although Neighborhood Action Strategies are not part of Tacoma's comprehensive plan, they make recommendations for changes to the comprehensive plan.  These documents also recommend a broad range of actions including specific projects, regulation changes, master planning, comprehensive plan changes and policies.  Because Neighborhood Action Strategies are not part of the comprehensive plan, they can be modified at any time; however, changes must be approved by the affected Neighborhood Council and the City Council.
