Project Description
The Port of Tacoma Road is the major heavy-haul arterial serving the Port of Tacoma. The City and Port partnership was successful in obtaining grant funds to help fund the design and construction costs for replacing approximately 7,800 feet of the road from East 11th Street to Marshall Avenue in Phase 1 of the project which was completed in March 2016. The City obtained additional funds to conduct Phase 2 of the project, which replaces the roadway from Marshall Avenue to SR 509, and replaces the signal at Port of Tacoma Road and Marshall Avenue.
Similar to Phase 1, the existing road surface will be replaced with ten inches of concrete pavement designed to heavy haul standards. In addition to the new road surface, the traffic signal at Marshall Avenue will be replaced. The traffic signal replacement is being funded equally by the City, US Oil and Auto Warehousing Company.
Project Update
During the initial business outreach meeting for phase 2 of
the City’s Port of Tacoma Road project, U.S. Oil and Auto Warehousing Company
both expressed interest in upgrading the traffic signal at Port of Tacoma Road
and Marshall Avenue to include a protected left turn signal from northbound
Port of Tacoma Road onto Marshall Avenue. The City designed, published the
upgrade to the traffic signal and opened bids in December 14, 2016. This work
is expected to start in May 2017. There will be no impact to the traffic during
the construction.
Open Houses
There have been two open houses held at the Fabulich Center for Phase 1 (January 30, 2014 and May 26, 2015), and one open house for Phase 2 on April 12, 2016. Additional outreach will occur as the project progresses.
