COVID-19 Update: Resources for Human Services Providers

The Tacoma Pierce County health department has released guidance for services provider preparation and response to COVID-19. Read more.

The City, as a funding provider, has the important role of helping to support our service providers so they can continue to provide vital programs and services in our community. Contracted providers are encouraged to reach out to the City about their specific needs related to COVID-19 response as the situation evolves.

Neighborhood and Community Services

The Neighborhood and Community Services Department (NCS) works to build healthy and successful neighborhoods and households through community problem solving, code compliance, funding human services, and partnering with community members to facilitate safe, clean, and attractive neighborhoods.

Code Compliance is responsible for ensuring that property owners maintain compliance with the Tacoma Municipal Code to protect the health, safety, and welfare of Tacoma's residents.

The Neighborhood Enhancement Team works to build partnerships among all City services to address community problems and coordinates programs such as Crime Prevention through Environmental Design (CPTED), Adopt-A-Spot and Community Clean-up programs.

Contracting Services implements  the City's human services initiatives and oversees the numerous non-profit programs under contract with the City to help meet the needs of Tacoma residents. The non-profit programs funded by the City strengthen our community by working to provide vulnerable populations, such as the seniors, persons with disabilities, victims of domestic violence, and people experiencing homelessness, mental illness or substance dependency with needed services such as food, shelter, treatment, education and employment services.

Special initiatives include oversight and funding of the Gang Reduction model and oversight of funding for the Mental Health and Substance Use Disorder tax.

2020 NCS Strategic Planning Process

NCS is currently working with a consultant, Analytic Insight, on strategic planning for the next five years. The plan development process will last from February through May 2020 and include multiple opportunities for the community to engage and provide feedback.
