Qualifying & Selection Process

Filing of Applications: A separate application is required for each posted position.

Qualifying
: Your application must indicate that you meet the minimum qualifications as stated in the official job announcement or the application will be disqualified and a notification of such action will be mailed to you.

Reasonable Accommodations for Testing

Veterans' Preference: Pursuant to state law, special credit will be added to passing scores of qualified veterans who have submitted the appropriate documentation at the time of application (DD Form 214, Member copy 4).

 Eligibility for Hire: You must pass the exam process in order to be considered for interview and/or hire.

 Employee Benefits

Medical Coverage: For eligible employees and their families, including dependent children age 19 or younger.

Dental Coverage: For eligible employees and their families, including dependent children age 18 or younger.

Vision Coverage: For employees and their eligible dependents.

Paid Leave: City Employees are entitled to receive paid holidays, sick leave/vacation leave or Personal Time Off (PTO), depending upon union affiliation and appointment type.

Insurance Plans: Employees are covered by a long-term disability plan.  Short-term and expanded long-term disability insurance plans are also available to the employee.

The State Industrial Insurance Act also covers employees.


Deferred Compensation:
Income can be set aside on a pretax basis and invested for supplementation of normal retirement income.

Retirement: All employees of the City, except members of the Police and Fire services, Tacoma Rail and certain project employees, are included in the Tacoma Employes' Retirement System. Information on the Tacoma Employes' Retirement System can be found at www.cityoftacoma.org or by calling (253) 591-2035. All members of the Tacoma Employes' Retirement System are also covered by Social Security. Members of the Police and Fire services and Tacoma Rail employees are covered by separate pension systems.

 

Other Employment Information

Direct Deposit: Employees are paid on a bi-weekly schedule by direct deposit.

 Salary Increases: The City provides for a regular progression of salary increases based on satisfactory job performance for most classifications, based on the salary schedule.

Union Affiliation: Many job classifications are covered by union security provisions which require union membership, dues, or payment of equivalent services fees.
