EnviroHouse

About & Driving Directions

The EnviroHouse is funded by the five City of Tacoma Utilities and is governed by a Steering Committee serving as the legislative, policy and decision-making entity responsible for overall governance, budgets, and strategic direction of the EnviroHouse. Day-to-day operations and programs are managed by a full-time coordinator.

EnviroHouse Vision
We envision Tacoma/Pierce County residents as environmental stewards and leaders in sustainable living practices, with equitable access to relevant information, resources, and activities to make responsible choices and inspire others to create a cleaner and healthier place where they live, work, and play.

We are guided by a strategic plan providing an intentional look at activities, programs, and communications to advance our sustainability goals, identify priorities for current and future funding, expand educational opportunities and cultivate diversity, equity, and trust in our operations.

Background
The EnviroHouse is a repurposed facility originally operated by Pierce County Public Works. Known as the “Green House,” it served as an outreach green living demonstration in the 1990s. Acquired by the City of Tacoma Solid Waste Division in 2004, the structure was moved to the Tacoma Recovery and Transfer Center and repurposed as a permanent onsite exhibit and opened to the public in 2006.

Driving Directions

EnviroHouse Programming Announcement

The City of Tacoma has announced that the EnviroHouse will be closing at the end of this year. The final day for the public to visit the facility will be Sunday, December 22, 2024.

The decision was based on feedback from the community, funding considerations, accessibility needs, a review of our education and outreach programming, and broader organizational focus. The EnviroHouse building will remain in City possession, although its future use has not yet been determined.

While the facility will close, the City of Tacoma remains deeply committed to environmental education. We will continue to offer opportunities for the community to engage in sustainability education efforts, and welcome feedback. Recorded EnviroHouse workshops, How-To videos, and other resources will remain available at cityoftacoma.org/workshops.
