4.1.1-Continue to broaden our current community policing efforts of co-producing public safety by reaching out to all segments of the community to identify problems, develop strategies and implement solutions together.

The Tacoma Police Department (TPD) has reached out and contacted different segments of the community. The TPD is working with each group to build stronger relationships to foster trust and understanding. The following are organizations represent different areas of the community we have been working with: Central Latino, Korean’s Women’s Association, Slavic Community Center, Peace Lutheran Church, Peoples Center, Boys & Girls Clubs, Tacoma Public Schools, YMCA Youth Programs, and the Tacoma Asia Pacific Cultural Center.

4.1.2-Enhance the Mental Health Co-Responders Program by implementing a Crisis Intervention Team.

  • Obtained Designated Mental Health Professional (DMHP) status for both Co-Responders which will increase the efficiency and effectiveness for the program. It also enhances and expands their ability to perform their functions at a higher level
  • Added 12 more team members (seeking to add two more Co-Responder Mental Health Professionals by January 2017 to provide broader coverage)
  • Increased Crisis Intervention Team to 30 team members

  • Added dedicated Community Liaison to the City of Tacoma Homeless Outreach Team
  • Hosted a 40-hour State Certified Crisis Intervention Training sponsored by Criminal Justice Training Commission (CJTC) with 20 TPD members (total of 50 trained officers)
March 2017 Sent contingent to Portland Police Department to shadow their program.
April 2017
  • Created Homeless Outreach Team consisting of one Community Liaison Officer
  • Conducted interviews for new Mental Health Professional
  • Sent contingency to San Diego to review their Homeless Outreach Team Program
May 2017 Increased Homelessness Outreach Team temporarily by one sergeant and three officers

  • Added one Mental Health Professional to the Homeless Outreach Team
  • Sent contingency to San Antonio to review their Homeless Outreach Team Program
July 2017 Added one Social Outreach Worker and one Code Enforcement Officer to the Homeless Outreach Team

4.1.3-Review and enhance the Citizens' Academy Program.

Hosted Citizens' Academy #48 where information was provided to multiple diverse organizations within the community as an effort to solicit increased participation
December 2016 Fourty-four individuals graduated from the Citizens' Academy on December 14 with next class scheduled for Fall 2017. Solicitations for improvement will be requested from current graduates.
June 2017 Planning began for the next Citizens' Academy
July 2017 Next Citizens' Academy is scheduled to begin September 20, 2017
September 2017 Started a new Academy with 29 participants

4.1.4-Develop an interactive presentation that can be used to educate and engage the community on the structure, goals, and function of the police department.
