Celebrate Green Tacoma Day and Connect with Nature on October 12
--Help Keep Tacoma Green by Volunteering at One of 14 Sites--
The Green Tacoma Partnership invites businesses, community groups, families and individuals to participate in Green Tacoma Day and Arbor Day activities, on Saturday, October 12. Green Tacoma Day is the celebration of the partnership’s work to restore urban green spaces, while Arbor Day celebrates the planting, growing, and caring of Tacoma’s trees. Kicking off the day’s events will be the Tree City USA awards starting at 9 AM, at Stewart Heights Park, followed by restoration events at 14 sites across the city, from 10 AM to 1 PM.
For 25 years, the Arbor Day Foundation has recognized Tacoma as a Tree City USA. For 15 years, Tacoma Public Utilities has been recognized as a Tree Line USA, for their commitment to maintaining a healthy tree canopy and using best practices in utility tree maintenance.
This year, the Washington Department of Natural Resources State Forester, George Geissler, will present the Tree City and Tree Line USA awards in celebration of Tacoma’s achievements. Share in the celebration and enjoy tree-planting opportunities from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m., at Stewart Heights Park (5715 Reginald Gutierrez Ln.).
In addition, Tacoma City Council members will participate in Green Tacoma Day by planting trees at Fireman's Park (801 A St.) starting at 10:30 AM.
Residents interested in keeping Tacoma green in their backyard are encouraged to check out the Tree Coupon Program. The program is open now through March 31, 2020, to Tacoma and Pierce County residents. For more information, visit cityoftacoma.org/treecoupon.
