The City of Tacoma is comprised of many departments and offices that serve its citizens with services ranging from public safety to maintenance of the streets and other infrastructures that keep the city running day after day.  Each department and office is listed below for you to explore.

City Attorney's Office

Chris Bacha, City Attorney

The City Attorney's Office acts as legal adviser to the City Council, the City Manager, and all officers, departments, and boards for the City.

The role of the City Manager’s Office is to work with the City Council and City Departments to ensure effective implementation of the City's policies.

The Community and Economic Development Department works to establish Tacoma as a destination city by attracting investment that builds a vibrant economy, strengthens the heart of the city, and enhances neighborhood livability.

Environmental Services

Mike SlevinDirector
Environmental Services protects and restores natural resources by keeping our city clean, safe, and livable through garbage and recycling pickup, wastewater treatment, household hazardous waste disposal, protection from storm water pollution, and many additional services.

Equity and Human Rights

The mission of the Office of Equity and Human Rights (OEHR) is to achieve equity in our service delivery, decision making and community engagement.

Finance Department

Andy Cherullo, Director
The Finance Department provides financial expertise and services that support the City's governing bodies in establishing strategic goals and policies and ensuring financial accountability to the citizens, businesses, taxpayers, and ratepayers.

Hearing Examiner

Jeff H. Capell, Director
The Office of the Hearing Examiner is charged with conducting fair and impartial administrative hearings in many types of cases identified in the Code. These include contested hearings on appeals and public hearings regarding proposed developments.

Human Resources

Shelby Fritz, Director
The Human Resources Department assists City departments in developing and maintaining a qualified, effective, and diverse workforce. The Department also provides employment-related services to the City's employees and job applicants.

The Information Technology Department provides technology services for internal city departments and divisions.

Municipal Court

The Tacoma Municipal Court acts as an independent and impartial branch of the City Government.  Their purpose is to promote respect for law, society, and individual rights, provide open, accessible, and effective forums for dispute resolution, resolve legal matters in a just, efficient, and timely manner, and assure the dignified and fair treatment of all parties.

Neighborhood and Community Services

Allyson Griffith, Director 

The Neighborhood and Community Services Department works to build healthy and successful neighborhoods and households through the protection of human rights, code enforcement, community problem-solving, and indirect and direct services which include human services and services for the elderly and youth.

Office of Management and Budget

The Office of Management and Budget assists the City by providing fiscal planning, analysis, and management services to enable the City organization to provide City services in accordance with the policies, goals and objectives established by the City Manager and the Tacoma City Council. We also coordinate the preparation of the City’s Operating Budget and Capital Facilities Plan.

Planning and Development Services

The Planning and Development Services Department has representatives located in the Permit Center.  This collection of representatives includes experts for building code, land use and zoning, traffic, environmental services, private development, and right-of-way.

The Tacoma Police Department’s mission is to create a safe and secure environment in which to live, work, and visit by working together with the community, enforcing the law in a fair and impartial manner, preserving the peace and order in our neighborhoods, and safeguarding our Constitutional guarantees.

Adam Cook, Director
The Tacoma Venues & Events Department oversees the management and maintenance of The Tacoma Dome, Cheney Stadium, the Greater Tacoma Convention Center, the Pantages Theater, Rialto Theater, and Theater on the Square.
