The State Building Code Council was created to provide independent analysis and objective advice to the legislature and the Governor's Office on state building code issues. The Council establishes the minimum building, mechanical, fire, plumbing, and energy code requirements necessary to promote the health, safety, and welfare of the people of the state of Washington by reviewing, developing, and adopting the state building code.
In the State of Washington and the City of Tacoma, rules governing fire prevention are addressed in the International Fire Code (IFC) with state adopted amendments. For more information about the IFC or to purchase a copy of the code book, visit the International Code Council website.
In addition to the requirements detailed in the 2018 IFC, the City of Tacoma has also adopted its own local amendments that can be found in Title 3 Fire, Chapter 3.02 of the Tacoma Municipal Code.
