Can I receive legal advice from the City Attorney’s Office?
No.  The attorneys in the City Attorney’s Office serve as attorneys for City government and City officials, rather than individual citizens.  Individuals must retain their own attorneys for legal advice and representation.

The Tacoma-Pierce County Bar Association has a Lawyer Referral Service at (253) 383‑3432.

 

How do I file a claim for damages against the City?

Claims for damages against the City must be filed within the applicable statute of limitations. The process for submitting a claim to the City and links to the online claim filing portal and to Claim for Damages forms are available online at www.cityoftacoma.org/claims.

 

How should I report a crime?

For emergencies, report crimes to the Tacoma Police Department through the “911” phone system.  For non-emergencies,  please call the the Tacoma Police Department non-emergency number at (253) 287-4455.

Should I contact the Prosecution Division if I am a defendant being charged in a case?

The Prosecution Division can provide hearing dates and similar information, if necessary, at (253) 591-5834, by fax at (253) 591-5398, or in person at 930 Tacoma Avenue South, Room 440, Tacoma, WA 98402.  However, defendants should never call and give case details; it is best for defendants to work through their counsel.
 

How do I know if my case will be filed in Municipal Court or Superior Court?

Felonies are filed in Pierce County Superior Court.  Please contact Pierce County Superior Court at (253) 798-7455 or in person at 930 Tacoma Avenue South, Room 110, Tacoma, WA 98402. Misdemeanors occurring within Tacoma City limits are filed in Tacoma Municipal Court.  Please contact Tacoma Municipal Court at (253) 591‑5357 or in person at 930 Tacoma Avenue South, Room 841, Tacoma, WA 98402.

I have called the Prosecution Division about my police report and they do not have it.  Who do I call to find out the status of the report?

The Police Department may be doing additional investigation.  In that event, the report will forwarded to the Prosecution Division for review upon completion.
