Council Member Sarah Rumbaugh

Council Member Sarah Rumbaugh - Position 2

Council Member Sarah Rumbaugh, elected in November 2021, serves District 2, which includes parts of downtown Tacoma, Stadium District, Old Town, North Slope, the Port of Tacoma and Northeast Tacoma. She envisions a more vibrant city, one that is supportive of business growth and the creation living wage jobs while also helping community members who are in need. 

 

Council Member Rumbaugh serves on the Community Vitality and Safety Committee and Government Performance and Finance Committee. She is the proud Chair of the Crystal Judson Family Justice Center Board.

 

Committed to addressing the issues of affordable housing and homelessness at a local and regional level, Council Member Rumbaugh has served as a member of the Affordable Housing Consortium and the Associated Ministries Board.

Maintaining a steady focus on equity in all of her work, Council Member Rumbaugh has also served on the City of Tacoma’s Human Rights Commission to study and investigate problems of prejudice, bigotry, and discrimination, and to encourage and coordinate the implementation of programs consistent with the needs and the rights of all residents of Tacoma. An active member at Temple Beth El, where she has served in a number of leadership roles, she now co-chairs Temple Beth El’s Social Justice Committee. 

Involved in a variety of capacities in public service for the last two decades, Council Member Rumbaugh has a professional background in city planning, and has also worked to raise funds for several non-profit agencies that address a range of social issues to include environmental education, university funding,  sexual assault and sexual abuse, and business development. 

Deeply committed to education, which she regards as life-changing, Council Member Rumbaugh is a proud graduate of Gonzaga University, which she attended on a cross country scholarship, earning a bachelor of arts majoring in political science with a minor in history. She also earned a master’s degree in environmental studies from The Evergreen State College, and is supportive of Tacoma’s sustainability and climate action goals. 

Council Member Rumbaugh has served as PTA president at Browns Point Elementary, and has lived in Northeast Tacoma with her husband, Stan, since 2008. She has two adult daughters, Miriam and Gabrielle.
