Council Member Olgy Diaz brings a wealth of experience and a deep commitment to public service to the Tacoma City Council. Appointed in 2022 and elected to a full term in 2023, she represents all of Tacoma as an at-large council member, making history as the first Latina and first out female LGBTQ person to serve in this role.
Born and raised in Pierce County, Council Member Diaz's values were shaped by her parents, Guatemalan immigrants who instilled in her the importance of hard work, humor, and family. Following in their footsteps, she became the first in her family to graduate from college, earning dual degrees in Latin American Studies and Women's Studies from the University of Washington.
Her dedication to fostering a more inclusive democracy led her to work with organizations like OneAmerica and Planned Parenthood, the Washington State Legislature, and various political campaigns. Currently, she also serves as the Deputy Director of Equity, Environmental Justice and Civil Rights for the Department of Natural Resources.
Council Member Diaz is a strong advocate for Tacoma's diverse communities. In her free time, she mentors future civic leaders and supports local small businesses. As a Tacoma Fire Buff, she supports Tacoma’s firefighters after they take care of those in crisis.
Her leadership extends to various roles within the city, including Pierce Transit Commissioner, Pierce County Regional Council Member, and Vice Chair for both the Infrastructure, Planning and Sustainability Committee and the Economic Development Committee.
A passionate advocate for nature and public spaces, Council Member Diaz prioritizes increasing Tacoma's urban tree canopy, promoting pet adoption, and creating safe, welcoming environments for all. Her vision for Tacoma centers on community safety, economic development, and expanding affordable housing options.
Council Member Diaz resides in South Tacoma with her two dogs, Pepita and Pancho, surrounded by her beloved houseplants.
