Safe Place

Tacoma Police Department's Safe Place Initiative

The Safe Place initiative is a partnership and a commitment to fight hate in our community. The Tacoma Police Department (TPD) commits to responding to, investigating and addressing all hate crimes, including crimes committed because of:

  • Race
  • Color
  • Religion
  • Ancestry
  • National origin
  • Gender
  • Sexual orientation
  • Gender expression or identity
  • Mental, physical, or sensory disabilities
  • Homelessness
  • Marital status
  • Political ideology
  • Age
  • Parental status

Make the Commitment to Help Stop Hate Crimes

As a business, school or social organization you can help stop hate crimes and bullying by committing to:

  • Calling 911 immediately, if a victim of any crime (especially a hate crime) enters your premises.
  • Allowing the victim to remain on your premise until police arrive.
  • Calling back 911 and providing a physical description of the victim and/or suspect(s), direction of travel and any injuries that you may have observed if the victim leaves prior to police arrival.

How the Safe Place Initiative Works

The Safe Place Initiative is ZERO COST to the business, school or organization. As with any emergency, your staff should use care and caution when providing the victims of crime safe shelter, while being mindful of the safety of your patrons, co-workers and compliance with existing company policies. There is no extra liability to your business or organization as we are not asking you to do anything you would not already do.

How to Get Involved

As a participant in the initiative, we will give you a free 'Safe Place' window decal you can put on display at your business to show that you are committed to fighting hate in our community. Once your form has been completed, your application will be sent to Tacoma Police Department’s Safe Place Coordinator who will then mail you your decal. Place your decal in the main public entrance of your building, easily visible to anyone walking past.
