Tideflats Subarea Planning Project Virtual Community Meeting February 4

A virtual community meeting to kick off the Tideflats Subarea Planning Project will be held from 5-6:30 p.m. Thursday February 4, 2021 on ZOOM.

The project team, including representatives from the City of Tacoma, Port of Tacoma, Puyallup Tribe of Indians, City of Fife and Pierce County, as well as project consultants from BERK, will introduce the subarea planning process, background on the Tideflats and answer community questions about the project.

“We know that this project is important to the community, and we are excited to start engaging with community members,” said Marcia Wagoner, engagement lead for BERK. “There is a lot of work ahead and participation and input from the community is a critical part of this project’s success.”

With over 5,000 acres of waterfront land providing vital saltwater and estuarian habitat for salmon, shellfish and other marine life, the area known as the Tacoma Tideflats is part of the ancestral land of the Puyallup Tribe, an economic center for industrial and manufacturing activity, and home to a world-class port.

The subarea plan will consider:

  • Potential text and map amendments to other elements of the City of Tacoma’s Comprehensive Plan
  • Potential Amendments to the City of Tacoma’s Land Use Regulatory Code
  • Potentially amended Zoning districts
  • A Shoreline Master Program update for the subarea
  • Information to support local and regional Capital Facilities Programs
  • An environmental impact statement (EIS).
