Share Your Vision for the Tideflats through Community Engagement Opportunities in March 

 

Three educational visioning sessions are planned for March 17, 18 and 20 to provide an opportunity for community members who are interested in the future of the Tacoma Tideflats to contribute ideas about what they hope to see in the area in the next 20 years. 

 

The Visioning Session events will each be held virtually on ZOOM. For meeting details and links, visit cityoftacoma.org/tideflats.  

 

Wednesday, March 17 from noon to 1 p.m. will be a discussion about Land Use & Economic Development focused on:  

  • The built character of the Tideflats and surrounding area 
  • The character and type of future growth 
  • Future economic opportunities 
  • Industrial trends and preservation of port maritime activities  
  • Relationship between the Tideflats and adjacent neighborhoods 
  • Mix of uses and needs within the Tideflats

 

Thursday, March 18 from 6-7 p.m. will be a discussion about Environment & Health focused on: 

  • The natural environment, including protection and preservation of plant and animal habitat areas, air and water quality, and risk of sea-level rise associated with climate change 

Saturday, March 20 from noon to 1 p.m. will be a discussion about Transportation/Infrastructure focused on: 

  • Transportation mobility, congestion, and safety  
  • Transit service 
  • Truck and rail freight access and capacity 
  • Active transportation 
  • Utilities 
  • Capacity to meet future demand 

The Tideflats Subarea Project Team is also asking for feedback through a brief online survey. Survey responses will be used to inform planning decisions. The survey is open from March 15-April 30 at cityoftacoma.org/tideflats.

About the Tideflats Subarea Planning Project  

The Tideflats subarea planning process, a partnership between City of Tacoma, Puyallup Tribe of Indians, Port of Tacoma, Pierce County and City of Fifeis intended to create a shared long-term vision and more coordinated approach to development, environmental review, and strategic capital investments in the Tideflats. Completion of the subarea plan will support the ongoing eligibility for and prioritization of transportation funding in the regional manufacturing and industrial center.  


About the Tideflats 

The Tideflats is an area of over 5,000 acres of waterfront land providing vital saltwater and estuarian habitat for salmon, shellfish and other marine life, the Tideflats is an economic center that includes industrial and manufacturing and maritime activity in a world class port and is the ancestral lands of the Puyallup Tribe of Indians.  The area is designated as the Port of Tacoma Manufacturing Industrial Center (MIC). The MIC is home to Tacoma and Pierce County’s highest concentration of industrial and manufacturing activity and is the work site for about 9,800 employees.
