At-Large Council Member Kristina Walker Begins Second Term

TACOMA, Wash. – At-Large Council Member Kristina Walker began her second term with the Tacoma City Council on January 9, 2024.

“It is an honor to represent the people of Tacoma as part of the City Council and I am grateful for the opportunity to continue addressing our most pressing issues,” said Council Member Walker, who has worked as an at-large representative on vital citywide and regional issues, including improving transportation, expanding affordable housing, and increasing environmental protections. In addition, she has led efforts to advance greater inclusion in the workforce and foster small businesses growth in Tacoma. As a mom of two young children, her work has also focused on community safety and the need to build a city where youth feel safe on our streets.

“I have a big agenda for my second term, and I am looking forward to working with people from across the city to find durable solutions for the challenges we face,” added Council Member Walker. “I am especially eager to build on the innovative work Tacoma is undertaking regarding community safety. We have launched cutting-edge alternative emergency response models that are resonating with our community, and I aim to build on these successes to ensure that Tacoma is a safe and welcoming place for everyone.”

Council Member Walker holds multiple leadership positions, including serving as the Chair of the City Council’s Infrastructure, Planning, and Sustainability Committee and Co-Chair of the Joint Municipal Action Committee. Along with serving on a variety of additional Council boards and committees, she is also the Chair of the Pierce Transit Commission and a member of the Sound Transit Board of Directors.

“I am excited to continue leading our efforts to ensure that Tacoma’s transportation system offers multimodal travel, fosters healthy living, and protects our environment,” said Council Member Walker. “In addition, I plan to help ensure that, as our city grows, we strive to create affordable housing for all. We are also grappling with a climate emergency that requires urgent action. I plan to further advance our efforts to meet our 2030 Climate Action Plan goals, including enhancing Tacoma’s tree canopy and strengthening our local circular economy. The stakes are high for our city. We have a lot of hard work to do, but I know that together we can navigate our challenges and bring our shared vision for a just, equitable, and thriving Tacoma to life.”

Last year, Council Member Walker served a one-year appointment as Deputy Mayor of Tacoma.

“Council Member Walker is a proven leader, and was invaluable in supporting our priorities during her tenure as Deputy Mayor for 2023,” said Mayor Victoria Woodards. “I want to thank her for her service to the City Council as Deputy Mayor, and extend my congratulations on her reelection. Tacoma will certainly benefit from her continued passion and dedication to our community.”
