SALMON BEACH - WASTEWATER MANAGEMENT

If you live in Salmon Beach, chances are you're familiar with the unique vacuum-style sewer systems. If not, here's a quick overview: vacuum-style sewer system uses suction to transport wastewater from homes to a central collection point for treatment, instead of relying on gravity like a traditional sewer system. It's efficient and is especially useful in areas where the terrain makes traditional sewer systems difficult to install (like the beach), but it also comes with some challenges.

Whether you're new to the area or have been in Salmon Beach for years, this page aims to provide residents with resources and information to learn more about how these systems work, the benefits and challenges, and what you can do to ensure they continue to function properly. Let's work together to keep our community clean, healthy, and thriving!

VACUUM SEWER SYSTEM CHALLENGES

It's essential for homeowners to familiarize themselves with their specific responsibilities regarding vacuum sewer systems and to communicate with the City to ensure the proper functioning and maintenance of the system. Currently, instances of faulty plumbing has been causing wastewater to enter directly into Puget Sound and allowing seawater to enter the wastewater vacuum system causing damage and possible failure. Sewage can damage the environment, contaminate local shellfish populations, and can cause human health issues. High tides can cause seawater and debris to enter the vacuum system and potentially cause total failure putting all Salmon Beach residents out of service, and failure to address these issues can lead to increasing enforcement.

WHAT CAN I DO TO HELP?

By following some best practices outlined below, homeowners can contribute to the efficient operation, longevity, and sustainability of their vacuum sewer systems, benefiting both their households and the Puget Sound.
