Expanded Electric Vehicle (EV) Charging in Downtown Tacoma
Construction on the Downtown EV Charging Expansion Project is nearly complete, bringing 34 new Electric Vehicle (EV) chargers to seven City-operated parking lots and garages. This expansion nearly doubles the number of available chargers, providing more convenient charging options for residents, visitors, businesses, and employees.
With this project, downtown Tacoma now has 64 total EV chargers, including 58 Level 2 chargers (240V) and 4 Level 3 DC Fast Chargers (480V) at two key locations near I-705.
Expanding the EV charging network supports the City’s Tacoma 2030 Climate Action Plan by making electric transportation more accessible and reducing carbon emissions and air pollution.

Project Funding and Future Expansion
This project was funded by a Washington State Department of Commerce Electrification of Transportation Systems Program grant, along with support from the Puget Sound Clean Air Agency and the Washington Clean Fuel Standard credit revenue.
Building on this initial investment, Commerce is funding an additional 203 Level 2 charging ports and 18 Level 3 DC fast chargers at 19 sites in Tacoma, expected to open between mid-2025 and mid-2026.
This ETS Downtown Parking project is funded primarily through a grant awarded by the WA Commerce Clean Energy Fund. City’s Sustainability Office and Tacoma Power collaboratively developed scope and obtaining of the grant. Tacoma Power is the project manager working in partnership with Public Works Parking and Tacoma Venue Events who operate the fee-based parking lots.
