Road Closures
Please be advised that starting July 7, 2014 the road lane adjacent to TCC along South Mildred Street will be opened for traffic and the road lane adjacent to James Center will be closed for construction.
Project Description
This project will rehabilitate the existing roadway along South Mildred Street from South 19th Street to South 12th Street. Complete Street concepts will be incorporated into the design of the project by introducing bicycle lanes in each direction, bus pullouts and adding mid-block landscaped pedestrian islands to improve the pedestrian crossings along South Mildred Street.
Originally, the existing roadway was scheduled to be ground down and repaved again with two inches of asphalt. Now with the addition of a recent Federally Funded Grant (Quick Response Safety Program), the City will remove the existing asphalt roadway in its entirety and replace it with a new eight inch thick concrete section. The City will remove a portion of the existing storm water drainage system and replaced it with a larger pipe to reduce the flooding that occurs during high-intensity rainfall events.
To incorporate the new bicycle lanes, the existing five vehicle lanes will be reduced down to three vehicle lanes. The City will also construct new sidewalks, curb ramps and driveways, where required, to meet current ADA standards. Work should begin in April 2014 and last approximately four to five months. During construction, traffic will be reduced to one lane in each direction; local access will be maintained at all times.
Project Update
The project was re-advertised this past December and bids opened on January 7, 2014. Ten bid submittals were received and reviewed by the Public Works Department and the Washington State Department of Transportation (WSDOT). Rodarte Construction, Inc. was the lowest responsible and responsive bidder. Construction is expected to begin in April 2014.
During construction, traffic will be reduced to one lane in each direction. The contractor will provide a minimum of one week advance notice to residents and businesses before starting work. Local access will be maintained at all times.
