Project Background
In reviewing accident reports (crash data) provided by both WSDOT as well as the City of Tacoma from 2007 to 2011, it was determined that three project-related intersections were in need of improvement; South 25th Street, Yakima Avenue, and Tacoma Avenue South. Due to this need, the City of Tacoma received two grants from the Federal Highway Safety Improvement Program (HSIP). $880,000 was awarded in 2008 and $251,097 was awarded in 2013.
Project Description
This project will construct one new traffic signal at South 25th Street and J Street. The new signal will include vehicle and pedestrian signals, detection, and ADA sidewalk ramps. The existing traffic signals on South 25th Street at the intersections of Yakima Avenue and Tacoma Avenue will be upgraded. The upgrades will include vehicle detection and electronic signal controllers with conflict safety monitors. Traffic signal interconnect will be installed on South 25th Street and on Yakima Avenue.
