Tacoma Works Summit and Initiative Launch
On March 22, 2017, Mayor Strickland convened a summit of contractors, public sector agencies, education and job training organizations, and workforce development agencies to identify barriers and solutions to getting more people in Tacoma-Pierce County employed in the construction field.
Some of the potential strategies that emerged from the Summit were:
- Change the way we talk about the trades to emphasize the potential for a living wage career path to attract young talent to the workforce.
- Improve workers’ access to safe and reliable transportation to ensure that they can get to and from job sites.
- Apply an apprenticeship sub-goal to City of Tacoma contracts to boost the amount of hours worked by apprentices.
- Explore possibility for a construction academy that would provide high school students with an introduction to the skills needed in the construction industry.
