Beacon Center Renovation Project

Beacon Activity Center Improvements

415 S. 13th Street, Tacoma

Facility renovation is underway at Beacon Activity Center (415 South 13th Street) to address repair needs and make improvements to the space. This will enable the facility to function long-term as a Multi-Generational Center, serving as both a senior activity center and an overnight shelter for young adults, while providing some cross over services and activities between these groups. In an effort to minimize impacts to ongoing services at the facility, construction will be completed over several phases.

Phase 1 Improvements (Completed Spring 2022):

This project focused on priority needs to enhance the level of service at the facility. Improvements included:

  • The addition of gender-neutral and ADA compliant showers and restrooms (single occupancy)
  • Laundry facilities
  • Kitchen storage space
  • Kitchenette
  • Access modifications to the stage area (including wheelchair lift)
  • Fire alarm system enhancements
  • Security cameras
  • Interior cosmetic upgrades (painting, floor refinishing)
  • Re-roofing of the sloped roof and new furnishings

In addition, as part of the Revitalizing Tacoma’s Brewery District project that is under construction, improvements will be made to the ADA parking on Fawcett Avenue adjacent to the facility.

Phase 2 Improvements (In Design, Construction anticipated 2023):

This project will focus on deferred repair and replacements, and modernization of building systems. Improvements to the exterior include new siding, paint, window replacements and re-roofing of the flat roofs. The building’s heating system will be upgraded to increase energy efficiency. Additional interior cosmetic upgrades will be completed and potential enhancement of building entrances.

LaundryRoom

A laundry room, with commercial grade equipment, was added to serve the public, especially those experiencing homelessness. A larger size washer and dryer allows the Shelter Operator to clean large linen loads (towels, sheets, etc.) in-house. A smaller set is provided for laundering personal clothing.
