Beacon Center Renovation Project

Beacon Activity Center Renovation Project

In late 2018, we conducted a feasibility study to assess our options renovate the Beacon Activity Center in order to address deferred maintenance needs and make improvements to the space so that long term it can function as both a senior activity center and for youth and young adult day and overnight services.

The COVID pandemic and subsequent City budget shortfall required us to pause the project and revise our original plan of allocating $4.58 million in funding to renovate approximately 12,000 square feet of the building, with construction anticipated to begin in fall 2020.

In the 2021-2022 biennial budget, we revised the budget to $3.5 million and prioritized improvements to the space. The anticipated renovation continues to support the City’s goal of increasing shelter capacity and reinforces the City’s commitment to providing safe gathering space and services for seniors.

The Proposed Renovation

Beginning in June 2021, we anticipate construction on the following renovation to begin:

  • Priority Operational Improvements including single occupancy showers and restrooms, laundry capacity, kitchen storage space and an area for case management.
  • Minor deferred repairs including replacement of building systems and cosmetic improvements such as painting and floor re-finishing.
  • Create off-site improvements to include ADA parking along Fawcett and replace damaged or defective off-site features.

During construction, youth and young adult services will continue to operate on-site and construction needs will be coordinated with the youth and young adult program providers.

We do not anticipate construction conflicts with seniors services due to the temporary closure for COVID-19 safety and our current renovation timeline. Should senior services resume prior to completion of construction that would impact their use of space, the programming would be accommodated at Lighthouse Activity Center temporarily.
