Overview
South 48th and Tacoma Mall Blvd. is one of the busiest
intersections in Tacoma and the road is severely deteriorated. It currently
consists of ten to 12-foot wide asphalt travel lanes, and five-foot wide concrete
sidewalks on all sides. Accessibility is impaired due to the absence of curb
ramps on all corners.
The City will perform a grind and overlay (HMA) across the
intersection extending approximately 150 feet in the north, south, and east
legs, and approximately 320 feet on the west leg (to within the vicinity of the
Pierce Transit bus stop). Pedestrian and ADA upgrades will be constructed at this intersection. The project will also involve minor storm improvements.
Project Update
Construction started July 14, 2016. Contractor, Puget Paving & Construction, Inc., is working on installing electrical components on all four corners of S. 48th and Tacoma Mall Blvd. Work will continue through October 21, 2016.
The week of September 19th Contractor will stripe the intersection and raise the utilities in the roadway on South 48th St and Tacoma Mall Blvd.
