Tacoma Avenue Bridge

Ribbon Cutting Ceremony

Join the City for the Tacoma Avenue South  Bridge Ribbon Cutting Ceremony on August 4, 2016, from 2 to 3 PM. The ceremony will be held on the bridge located between Center and Delin streets in Tacoma.

Overview

The Tacoma Avenue South Bridge will be rehabilitated with a new bridge deck, streetlights, guardrails and the entire bridge will be painted.  These improvements will make the bridge look like new once completed. The traffic lanes will be re-configured from the current four vehicular lanes to three vehicular lanes and two bicycle lanes and wider sidewalks.

Why are we doing this?

This bridge was constructed in 1930 and effects of time have worn away some of the load carrying capacity. To improve the structural integrity of the bridge it will receive new steel girders, repair of the south abutment, seismic improvements and general repair of steel elements throughout the bridge. After project completion the bridge will be fully open to all legal loads.

Outreach

An extensive public outreach was conducted prior to beginning work on the project. The main focus of the outreach was to inform stakeholders the bridge will be closed for about 15 months to complete these improvements. The following stakeholder groups were included in the outreach:

  • Dometop Neighborhood Alliance
  • Hillside Development Council
  • Jenny Reed Neighbors
  • Lincoln South Neighbors
  • Lincoln West Safe Streets
  • South End Neighborhood Council
  • Whitman Area Neighbors
  • Holy Rosary School
  • Lincoln High School

Schedule

The bridge will be closed during construction from February 2015 through June 2016.  The project is expected to take 15 months to complete. The bridge is scheduled to open in June 2016.
