Council Member Joe Bushnell on Passage of Resolution 41474

“This Charter amendment asks for the community to affirm that Council Members will prioritize their City work above all else and devote sufficient time to carry out their obligations and duties. This is the expectation I set for myself and this is what the community expects of me. I spend a vast majority of the work week, including evenings and weekends, executing my duties as a Tacoma City Council Member. As a representative of District 5 and Tacoma, it is my duty to speak and advocate on behalf of my district, constituents and the city as a whole. The Charter currently lacks specificity on the duties and expectations for the Council Member position, which has always been regarded and resourced to be a “part-time” position. I think it is critical to establish some clarity regarding what service as a Council Member truly entails and what resources a Council Member would need to do the job right. At the same time, I also hope to underscore for everyone across our community that public service in this capacity is possible for anyone with the heart and the willingness to serve.”
