American Public Works Association Awards City of Tacoma With 2020 Project of the Year

The City of Tacoma’s Public Works Department was recently selected to receive the American Public Works Association (APWA) 2020 Project of the Year Award. Tacoma was selected for the Fishing Wars Memorial Bridge project. This award is from the Structures category for projects between $25 million and $75 million.

Construction on the Fishing Wars Memorial Bridge, located on Puyallup Avenue between Portland Avenue and Milwaukee Way, was completed in September 2019, with a cost of over $30 million. The project removed and replaced one-third of the bridge, starting west of the Puyallup River and extending to the intersection of Portland and Puyallup avenues. The project also replaced eight bearings, added new street lighting, sidewalks, bike lanes, and a new gateway structure.

This award recognizes the alliance between the City, the contractor, the consultant, and their cooperative achievements. APWA will recognize this year’s Project of the Year Award winners in a video posted to apwa.net on Monday, Aug. 31, 2020.
