Celebrate the Newest Section of Prairie Line Trail and New Interpretive Artworks

The City of Tacoma, Tacoma Art Museum, the Washington State Historical Society and Downtown On the Go, invite the community to a walking tour and reception to celebrate the latest Prairie Line Trail milestone from 5:30-7:30 PM October 3, 2019.

The Prairie Line Trail now connects the University of Washington Tacoma campus to the Foss Waterfront, and integrates gathering spaces, innovative green stormwater features, original artworks and interpretive features including online interpretation at prairielinetrail.org.

“This is an opportunity to celebrate a trail that provides people with an opportunity to walk, bike, gather and connect while learning more about Tacoma’s heritage and cultural diversity,” stated Tacoma Mayor Victoria Woodards. “With the help of the community partners that have been involved in this process, we are creating a great urban corridor revitalizing and activating the heart of our Downtown and our waterfront in a way that considers both the arts and the environment.”

The walking tour will leave from South 21st and Hood Street at 5:30 PM. The tour will showcase several new artworks interpreting the history of the Prairie Line, including:

• Working Forward, Weaving Anew by Esteban Camacho Steffensen and Jessilyn Brinkerhoff
• Nexus by Ryan Feddersen
• Shipment to China by Haiying Wu
• Pressure + Flow by Matthew Dockrey
• Where the Rails Meet the Sails by Rotator 
• All the Rivers in the World, Tacoma by Vaughn Bell (Commissioned by ArtsWA in partnership with University of Washington)

Several artists will be in attendance to talk about the work and answer questions.

“Tacoma’s Prairie Line Trail is a unique urban space that invites people of every age and group to walk the path of this community’s history, and to connect with how it continues to shape our present and future,” said Jennifer Kilmer, Washington State Historical Society director.

After the walking tour, please join Mayor Victoria Woodards and other community leaders for a reception and light refreshments at the Tacoma Art Museum from 6:30-7:30 PM.

This family-friendly event is free and includes activities for all ages and light refreshments.
