City Council Reappoints Elizabeth Pauli as City Manager
TACOMA. Wash. -- The Tacoma City Council has reappointed Elizabeth Pauli to the position of City Manager for a two-year period beginning May 16, 2021 and ending May 15, 2023. City Manager Pauli started serving as Tacoma's Interim City Manager in February 2017, until she was appointed to an initial two-year term as City Manager in May 2017 and reappointed to another two-year term as City Manager in May 2019.
“The last year has been a year of heightened volatility, uncertainty, complexity, and ambiguity layered with the simultaneous crises of COVID-19, systemic racism, climate change, homelessness, and housing,” said Mayor Victoria Woodards. “In the face of these historic challenges, City Manager Pauli has not only ensured continuity of essential services and administrative function, she has done so in a professional and dignified manner, with a steady and calm hand, a willingness to listen and respond in a timely, thoughtful and thorough manner, and a strategic approach to meeting the goals of the community.”
City Manager Pauli oversees a staff of 2,324, and a biennial General Government budget of $2.3 billion, of which $509 million is allocated to the General Fund. Tacoma has a population of more than 215,000.
Prior to her appointment as City Manager, Elizabeth Pauli served as Tacoma's City Attorney. She first joined the City of Tacoma in May 1998 as Chief Assistant City Attorney. She was appointed Acting City Attorney in 2004, and named City Attorney in 2005. Prior to joining the City of Tacoma, she was a partner at Tacoma law firm McGavick Graves.
A graduate of the University of Wisconsin-Madison Law School, City Manager Pauli also has bachelor of science degrees in education and social work from the University of Wisconsin-Madison. She is a member of the Washington State Bar Association and the Washington State Association of Municipal Attorneys.
