City of Tacoma Observes Christmas Day Dec. 25 and New Year's Day Jan. 1

Administrative offices in the Tacoma Municipal Building complex (747 Market St. and 733 Market St.) and in other City of Tacoma facilities will close Thursday, Dec. 25, in observance of Christmas Day, and Thursday, Jan. 1, in observance of New Year’s Day. 

The Tacoma Recovery and Transfer Center (3510 S. Mullen St.) will be closed all day on Thursday, Dec. 25 and Thursday, Jan. 1. Tacoma residents and businesses in Tacoma may dispose of undecorated and unflocked Christmas trees for free by bringing them to the Tacoma Recovery and Transfer Center between 8 a.m. and 6 p.m. Friday,Dec. 26 through Wednesday, Dec. 31, and Friday, Jan. 2 through Sunday, Jan. 25. 

There will be no pickups on Thursday, Dec. 25, or Thursday, Jan. 1. Those whose regular collection day falls on Thursday, Dec. 25, Friday, Dec. 26, Saturday, Dec. 27, Thursday, Jan. 1, Friday, Jan. 2, or Saturday, Jan. 3 will have their pickups one day later. Information specific to a customer’s address can be found at tacomarecycles.org/collectioncalendar

The City will only collect undecorated and unflocked Christmas trees that have been cut and placed inside brown yard waste containers with lids closed flat. Decorated or flocked Christmas trees cannot be recycled and must go in the garbage, and Christmas trees left next to containers will not be collected. Customers with specific questions about Christmas tree recycling may call 3-1-1 or (253) 591-5543.

Police and fire personnel will be on duty Thursday, Dec. 25 and Thursday, Jan. 1, and animal control personnel will be on duty from 8 a.m. - 8 p.m. on each of those days.   

Following is a list of other closures and service adjustments relating to the upcoming holidays:


  • TheEnviroHouse (3510 S. Mullen St.) will be closed Thursday, Dec. 25, and reopen Friday, Jan. 2 at 10 a.m. 
  • TheSenior Centers (415 S. 13th St. and 5016 A St.) will be closed on Thursday, Dec. 25 and Thursday, Jan. 1.
  • All Tacoma Public Library locations will be closed on Wednesday, Dec. 24, Thursday, Dec. 25 and Thursday, Jan. 1.
  • The Tacoma Municipal Court (930 Tacoma Ave. S) will be closed Thursday, Dec. 25, and Thursday, Jan. 1.
  • There will be no parking enforcement by City staff on Thursday, Dec. 25, and Thursday, Jan. 1.
