Residential Curbside Glass Recycling Changes Start January 4

Changes to the City of Tacoma’s residential curbside glass recycling program will take effect on Monday, January 4, 2021. On this date, curbside glass recycling collection will stop for all customers in single-family homes or duplexes, and be replaced with satellite glass recycling drop-off locations throughout the city. 

Starting January 4, Solid Waste Management will have several easily accessible drop-off stations open throughout Tacoma. More drop-off sites are under consideration and will be added to the list of current sites as they become available.

Locations Include: 

Central Co-op (4502 N. Pearl St.)
Hours: 7:30 AM to 9 PM; Monday - Sunday
Accepts: Glass and household batteries

Center at Norpoint (4818 Nassau Ave. NE)
Hours: 7:30 AM to 9 PM; Monday - Sunday
Accepts: Glass and household batteries

Stewart Heights Park (5715 Reginald Gutierrez Ln.
Hours: 7:30 AM to 9 PM; Monday - Sunday
Accepts: Glass, household batteries, scrap metal, cardboard

Tacoma Recycle Center (3510 S. Mullen St.)
Hours: 8:00 AM to 5:30 PM; Monday - Sunday

Accepts: Glass, household batteries, scrap metal, plastics, cardboard, paper, and much more.

“As part of the Recycle Reset, Solid Waste Management reviewed the materials we were collecting and how those related to international changes happing in the recycling industry,” said Recycle Reset Project Lead Preston Peck. “One of the big inefficiencies Solid Waste saw was around the residential glass recycling program. By changing this program to glass recycling drop-off locations, it will have environmental benefits by not sending out multiple trucks every day for pick up, economically this shift will save the City about half a million dollars per year, and finally, this change helps eliminate on-the-job safety hazards for staff related to glass recycling pick up.”

All sites require that customers observe COVID-19 guidelines by wearing face masks and maintaining social distancing when visiting these drop-off stations.
