Free Maritime Heritage Charter Tours this Saturday

Visitors are invited to ride the Island Lady and learn about Tacoma's maritime heritage on a free charter tour this coming Saturday, Sept. 20 and Sunday, Sept 21.

The tours, part of Maritime Fest’s activities, will begin at 11 a.m., 1 p.m. and 3 p.m. each day. Tickets are limited and available 30 minutes prior to each departure at the Foss Waterway Seaport.

This one-of-a-kind experience is presented by the Foss Waterway Seaport and City of Tacoma's Historic Preservation Office. The tours were inspired by the proposed Washington State National Maritime Heritage Area, which includes Tacoma.

It’s part of a shift within the City’s Historic Preservation Office that Lauren Hoogkamer, the program’s new coordinator, is making to engage a wider audience.

“Tacoma has an incredible sense of place that’s maintained through historic preservation,” said Hoogkamer. “Yet, for our efforts to be successful, people need to be interested, proud and excited by our past and historic resources.”

Hoogkamer works with community partners to offer diverse and compelling events and programming to communicate Tacoma’s unique heritage.
