Historic Preservation Lecture Series Kicks Off September 26
The Historic Preservation Office is hosting a three part series featuring experts in history, preservation and sustainability.
“We wanted to get away from the idea that historic preservation is only about old buildings and explore the issues of identity, historiography, and environment that make historic preservation important to the community, “ said Assistant Historic Preservation Officer Lauren Hoogkamer.
The series starts at 5:30 PM September 26 at the Murray Board Room at the University of Puget Sound (1500 N. Warner St.) with a presentation by Architect Claudia Kiyama, M.Arch, about Diversity in Historic Preservation.
The series, which is sponsored by the City of Tacoma, Tacoma Historical Society and Historic Tacoma will continue at 5:30 PM with Professor Kathryn Rogers Merlino, who will talk about Sustainability in Historic Preservation at 5:30 PM October 10 at Honey Café (1322 Fawcett Ave.).
The final event at 5:30 PM November 14 at Honey Café (1322 Fawcett Ave.) will feature Professor Andrew Gomez giving a talk about oral history and race in Tacoma.
All of the events are free and open to the public. This series is timely as the Tacoma Landmarks Preservation Commission recently partnered with Historic Tacoma to form a subcommittee to study issues of diversity and equity.
For more information about the events or to request an interpreter or access accommodation, please contact Lauren Hoogkamer by email at landmarks@cityoftacoma.org or call (253) 591-5254.
