I-5 and South 56th Street Interchange On and Off-Ramp Closures Start September 7

The City of Tacoma’s Public Works Engineering Division, in collaboration with the Washington State Department of Transportation (WSDOT), is constructing pedestrian curb ramps at the on and off-ramps of northbound and southbound I-5 at South 56th Street. Access to I-5 via the on and off-ramps will be closed along South 56th Street according to the following schedule.

Closure schedule:

  • Southbound I-5 off-ramp to eastbound South 56th Street and northbound I-5 on-ramp from eastbound South 56th Street will be closed starting at 7 AM on Wednesday, September 7, and will reopen at 9 PM on Friday, September 9.
  • Northbound I-5 off-ramp to eastbound South 56th Street will be closed at 7 AM on Monday, September 12, and will reopen at 9 PM on Wednesday, September 14.
  • Northbound I-5 on-ramp from westbound South 56th Street and northbound I-5 off-ramp to westbound South 56th Street will be closed at 7 AM on Thursday, September 15, and will reopen at 9 PM on Saturday, September 17.
  • Southbound I-5 on-ramp from westbound South 56th Street will be closed starting at 7 AM on Monday, September 19, and will reopen at 9 PM on Wednesday, September 21.

This work is part of the I-5 and South 56th Street Interchange ADA Compliance Project. All repairs are weather-dependent, and rescheduling may be required. Notice boards will be on location to notify drivers of the project and will also reflect any necessary changes. Drivers are reminded to use caution and expect delays when traveling in the area.

Those with questions or concerns may contact Project Manager Jon Kulju at jkulju@cityoftacoma.org or (253) 591-5204.
