Learn About Building Trades During Tacoma Arts Month

In conjunction with Tacoma Arts Month, the City of Tacoma’s Historic Preservation Office is hosting two events for the “So You Bought an Old House” series. These workshops are designed to highlight the art of the building trades by providing information for homeowners to update, maintain and restore elements of historic homes. These workshops include:

  • “Your House has DNA: Remodeling Historic Interiors” presented by Wren & Willow General Contractor: Thursday, Oct. 6, at 5:30 p.m. at B Sharp Coffee House (706 Opera Alley). Free refreshments will be available. Participants will learn how their old house can speak to them and be transformed into their new dream home. David Boe, of Boe Architects, will co-present.

  • Lighting Restoration Workshop presented by Tacoma Lamp Repair: Saturday, Oct. 22, at 1:30 p.m. at Earthwise Tacoma (628 E. 60th St.). This event will showcase environmentally friendly ways to restore vintage lighting fixtures. Participants can bring their own fixtures or learn what to look for while out treasure hunting. This event is limited to 25 participants; to reserve a spot RSVP to LHoogkamer@cityoftacoma.org or call (253) 591-5254.

“We wanted to highlight the art that goes into historic building materials and the trades people and artisans that create and maintain these original materials,” said Historic Preservation Coordinator Lauren Hoogkamer.
