A Statement From Mayor Victoria Woodards on
Governor Jay Inslee’s Decision to End ‘Stay Home, Stay Healthy’ Order,
Importance of Wearing Face Coverings and Pierce County’s Application to Move Into Phase 2
“While the clouds of COVID-19 still hang overhead, there is evidence that brighter days lie ahead. As Pierce County moves forward with their application to move into Phase 2, we will work with our local and state partners to determine what Governor Jay Inslee’s decision to end his ‘Stay Home, Stay Healthy’ order on May 31 will look like in detail for Tacoma.
The progress we have made to slow the spread of COVID-19 has only come as a result of the difficult but necessary steps we have taken as a community. The deep sacrifices made by every member of our community for the greater good have undoubtedly saved lives.
Recent reports have indicated that the transmission of the virus is decreasing in western Washington as residents and businesses find ways to improve physical distancing while conducting essential business responsibly. It is actions like these that will help Tacoma and our region expand reopening and recovery efforts.
As more counties across Washington state begin reopening in phases, I want to express my respect for Governor Inslee’s steady, bipartisan leadership and his courage while making responsible, data-driven decisions.
Joining me in the City of Tacoma’s response to COVID-19, your City Council Members, the City’s executive leaders, emergency response staff, and employees at every level of the organization have demonstrated creativity, effectiveness, and willingness to adapt to ensure continuity of services while diligently complying with public health recommendations.
Our work is not over and we must remain vigilant. We have made progress, and that progress must be maintained. I hope you will join me in staying resolute and taking actions that move us more rapidly toward recovery, like wearing a face covering when you go to the grocery store to shop. When we work collectively toward a shared goal, our City is stronger and more resilient. Together, we will get through this because we are Compassionate Tacoma.”
