Mutually Agree on Process to Establish Shared Vision for Tacoma Tideflats

 

TACOMA, Wash. - The City of Tacoma, Port of Tacoma, Puyallup Tribe, Pierce County and City of Fife have mutually agreed to a process to establish a subarea plan for the Tacoma Tideflats.  

"I am proud that we have come together to look at the future of the Tacoma Tideflats, and that we now have a clear framework for cooperation and information sharing," said Tacoma Mayor Victoria Woodards about the inclusive process which also respects the City of Tacoma’s jurisdiction, role as State Environmental Policy Act (SEPA) lead agency, and existing substantive and procedural obligations under the Growth Management Act, Shoreline Management Act, SEPA, and the Tacoma Municipal Code. "This is a historic effort, and possibly the largest ever collaborative, intergovernmental planning effort in Pierce County’s history."

With a project budget of $1.2 million, the goal is to develop and complete the Tideflats Subarea Plan, including supporting analyses and associated programmatic environmental impact statement, within approximately two years from the point that a project consultant is selected and begins work. 

This work will recognize that the Tacoma Tideflats and adjacent areas are of great significance to the City of Tacoma and its partners for reasons of heritage, environment, economics, employment. It will also follow the intent of an intergovernmental agreement between the City of Tacoma, Port of Tacoma and Puyallup Tribe, which additionally calls for participation by Pierce County and the City of Fife, concerning cost sharing for the Tacoma Tideflats subarea planning process. As agreed to in the intergovernmental agreement, overarching themes will include:

  • Economic Prosperity for All
  • Environmental Remediation and Protection
  • Transportation and Capital Facilities Plan
  • Public Participation and Outreach

When completed, the subarea plan will define a long-term community-informed vision for the Tacoma Tideflats, which will include a more coordinated approach between the City of Tacoma and its partners to development, environmental review and protection, as well as strategic capital investments.
