Tacoma’s Planning and Development Services Received Lifetime Achievement Award

The Office of Washington Governor Jay Inslee and the Washington State Department of Commerce recently presented the City of Tacoma’s Planning and Development Services with the “Lifetime of GMA” Achievement Award. The City received this award at a reception on Nov. 13, commemorating the 25th anniversary of the state’s landmark Growth Management Act.

The act was adopted by a coalition of state legislators and citizen groups that were concerned about the rapid, unplanned and unsustainable growth that took place in Washington State in the 1970s and 1980s.  The anniversary of this important act presents an opportunity to evaluate the impact this legislation has had on the state.

“It is an honor for the City of Tacoma and its staff, both past and present, to be recognized for the GMA accomplishments that have been successfully achieved over the last 20 years,” said Director of Planning and Development Services Peter Huffman. “Tacoma’s elected officials and citizenry must be applauded for their leadership in this important endeavor.”

Tacoma was selected as one of eight jurisdictions across the state that represents the greatest efforts by communities to envision and plan for their future. Between 2007 and 2015 the City has won the Governor's Smart Communities Award five times for their signature planning and partnership projects, leading to the receipt of this achievement award.
