Residential Parking Permit Revamp

Public invited to work session on Thursday, Sept. 18

The City of Tacoma’s current residential parking permit system is broken – so much so that the City has not allowed for the creation of any new residential parking permit areas for over two years. To help fix the system, the public is invited to attend a residential parking permit work session from 4:30-6:30 p.m. on Thursday, Sept.18.

With parking demands expected to increase, the Parking Technical Advisory Group, made up of volunteer citizens and business owners responsible for guiding such issues, has started the process to create a new system. What that will be exactly, they’re not sure. Though, they do know that it needs to be both fair and functional.

“We’ve looked at what works for other communities, but we need resident and business input to figure out what’s best for Tacoma,” said Parking Technical Advisory Group Co-chair Steph Farber.  “We know that we want a system that, in neighborhoods, offers parking space priority to residents and their guests during high demand, while still maximizing the use of these publically-owned spaces for the benefit of all users.”

At the work session, being held at the University of Puget Sound campus Wheelock Student Center near North Alder and North 16th streets, attendees will hear a presentation and discuss options with the Parking Technical Advisory Group members. Those interested who can’t make thework session, may also contribute using an online survey: https://www.surveymonkey.com/s/residentialparkingprogram.

Those with questions or comments may contact the City’s Parking Technical Advisory Group liaison, Eric Huseby, at (253) 591.5437 or ehuseby@cityoftacoma.org.
