This Year’s Summer Jobs 253 Program for Incoming Juniors and Seniors Kicks Off on June 21
-- Employers Expected to Announce Selected Summer Interns for First Time at Kick-Off Event --
TACOMA, Wash. -- This year's Summer Jobs 253 program is scheduled to kick off on Friday, June 21, 2019, from 10 a.m. - 2 p.m., at Tacoma Community College (Building H / Theater, 6501 S. 19th St.). The program – a workforce development initiative which first launched in 2013 – is now jointly spearheaded by the City of Tacoma and Tacoma Public Schools and managed by The REACH Center. It connects local employers in need of additional staffing support with high school interns seeking job-readiness skills and an opportunity to earn school credit.
“As we work with our community partners to ensure Tacoma maintains a competitive stance regionally and globally, it is imperative that we invest in tomorrow’s workforce,” said Mayor Victoria Woodards. “Through Summer Jobs 253, we’re helping students gain the professional skills they need by offering quality work experiences.”
“This program is really about partnership," said Tacoma Public Schools Superintendent Carla Santorno. "It is the district, the City and the business community coming together to support students, helping them to become our future leaders.”
At the upcoming kick-off event, Mayor Woodards and Superintendent Santorno will be in attendance along with other community leaders, as representatives from approximately 20 local employers announce for the first time who their selected summer interns are out of the 75 incoming juniors and seniors in attendance as part of the program.
Summer Jobs 253 is funded by the City, grants and scholarships, and employer contributions. Employers interested in getting involved with the program, or students who feel they may be a good fit, can obtain more information at
