City to Host Science and Heritage Focused Conversations About Tacoma Creates

The City of Tacoma’s Office of Arts & Cultural Vitality is hosting two community conversation events about Tacoma Creates – one focused on the science community and one focused on the heritage community. The heritage-focused event will be held on Monday, March 25, 5:30 – 7:30 p.m. at the Washington State History Museum (1911 Pacific Ave., Tacoma). The science-focused event will be held on Wednesday, April 10, 5:30 – 7:30 p.m. at RAIN Incubator (2304 Jefferson Ave., Tacoma). 

Tacoma Creates is a voter-approved initiative to expand and financially support arts, culture, heritage, and science experiences throughout Tacoma, reduce barriers to access, and increase offerings for youth after school and in the summer.  

“Science and heritage are vital fields of practice that enrich our community,” said Tacoma Arts Administrator Amy McBride. “We want to learn more about the unique needs of organizations grounded in these fields and how Tacoma Creates can support the expansion of their programming as they continue to serve our youth and neighborhoods.”

Organizations and community members whose work is focused on science and heritage are encouraged to attend to learn more about Tacoma Creates, its intended purpose, the parameters defined in the legislation to guide program development, opportunities this funding could support, and next steps as the City engages with the community to evolve it. 

Following a brief introductory presentation at each event, there will be a forum to share what programs science and heritage organizations currently offer in Tacoma and what the evolution of these programs could look like with Tacoma Creates funding support.  Feedback will be used to help guide the development of eligibility criteria and funding programs. 

Both events are free and open to the public. Supervised children are welcome; teens and young adults are encouraged to participate. Light refreshments will be served.
