Residents Encouraged to Prepare as Temperatures
Projected to Approach 90 Degrees Over Next Several Days

TACOMA, Wash. -- Weather forecasts indicate temperatures are expected to approach 90 degrees over the next several days. The City of Tacoma is encouraging residents to prepare for the heat, which can be dangerous to everyone. Residents are also encouraged to keep an eye on older adults, people with health concerns and children in their households, as these individuals are at a greater risk for heat exhaustion and heat stroke.

Recommended precautions for all residents include wearing light-colored clothing and lighter layers, hydrating early and often, and knowing how to spot the symptoms of heat exhaustion and heat stroke. Symptoms to watch for include cold, pale and clammy skin, heavy sweating, fainting or passing out, dizziness, fatigue, fast or weak pulse, tiredness or weakness, muscle cramps, nausea or vomiting, and headache. Individuals exhibiting these symptoms should cease activity, move to a cooler location, and seek medical attention.

The City is partnering with Catholic Community Services (CCS) to provide individuals who are experiencing homelessness with both daytime and nighttime heat relief.

For daytime heat relief, the Nativity House, located at 702 S. 14th St., will be open from 7 AM - 5 PM every day. CCS is also expected to open additional capacity at the Nativity House at night, when there are sustained nighttime temperatures of 70 degrees or higher, following daytime temperatures of 90 degrees or higher.

The City will also continue to support the library system with water on inclement weather days. Tacoma Public Library hours and locations are available at tacomalibrary.org

Additionally, the City is coordinating with homeless shelter providers, outreach teams, and volunteers to ensure they have adequate supplies.
